This can cause a variety of symptoms ranging from a clicking or popping sound when opening and closing your mouth, jaw soreness and stiffness, headaches, migraines, tinnitus (ringing ears), and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, your dentist can help treat TMJ disorders and bring lasting relief. In addition to those solutions, however, you may also benefit from regularly exercising your jaw. Here are some popular routines you can try at home under the guidance of your dentist:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Goldfish Exercise (full opening)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Press your tongue to the roof of your mouth and place a finger on your temporomandibular joint and another on your chin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relaxing your jaw, open your mouth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With your tongue in place, open your mouth all the way, close it, and then repeat six times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Goldfish Exercise (partial opening)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth and put one finger in front of your ear near your temporomandibular joint.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Place your index or middle finger on your chin, dropping your lower jaw halfway, and then close it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resisted Opening of the Mouth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Place your thumb under your chin and slowly open your mouth, pushing carefully against your chin for resistance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold this position for three to six seconds and slowly close your mouth after each repetition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resisted Closing of the Mouth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using one hand, squeeze your chin with your index finger and thumb.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Place gentle pressure on the chin and close your mouth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat ten times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chin Tuck<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This can be performed seated or standing.\u00a0 First, push your shoulders back and your chest up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next, pull your chin straight back and downward toward your chest, creating a \u201cdouble chin\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold the position for three seconds and repeat ten times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Side-to-Side Jaw Movement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Place a \u00bc inch object such as a tongue depressor between your teeth, slowly moving your jaw from side to side.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold each movement for two to three seconds and repeat ten times on each side.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Forward Jaw Movement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Place a \u00bc inch object between your front teeth and move your bottom jaw forward so your bottom teeth are in front of the top ones.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold this position for two or three seconds on each side and repeat ten times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relaxed Jaw Exercise<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rest your tongue on the roof of your mouth behind your upper front teeth and let your mouth come apart, relaxing your jaw muscles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open your mouth to a comfortable position and repeat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, if you are suffering from the debilitating effects of TMJ disorder, your dentist is the best person to help.
