Form inquiring about oral sedation dentistry

If you’ve been avoiding dental appointments because of anxiety, you’re not alone! Whether you have a basic checkup and cleaning or a more involved procedure like a root canal, it’s not uncommon to feel nervous. Fortunately, many dentists are aware that some patients struggle with worry and have medications that can help, such as oral conscious sedation. That said, it’s not necessarily the right choice for some patients so it’s important to identify whether you’re a good candidate. Keep reading to learn more!

What is Oral Conscious Sedation?

Oral conscious sedation refers to medication that you’ll take in pill form before your dental appointment to help reduce anxiety during your visit. You’ll be drowsy but awake for your procedure which allows your dentist to work with a patient who is calm but conscious. You can expect to feel relaxed throughout your visit but may not remember it afterward.

This method is not reserved for specific procedures or appointment types and can be helpful during restorative treatments, cosmetic procedures, gum disease therapy, and even oral surgeries. Typically, your vital signs will be monitored before, during, and after sedation to ensure that you remain safe the entire time. It takes anywhere from 2 to 8 hours to wear off, so you’ll need to bring a friend or family member to help drive you home after your appointment.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Oral Conscious Sedation?

Oral conscious sedation is often helpful for patients who have:

  • Intense worry around dental visits.
  • A strong gag reflex.
  • Overly sensitive teeth or gums.
  • A resistance to local anesthetic or fear of needles.
  • Physical challenges sitting still or holding their mouth open for long periods.
  • Chronic jaw pain.

Is Oral Conscious Sedation Safe?

This medication is generally considered to be harmless but there are a few circumstances in which it should be avoided. If you are pregnant or nursing, for example, it’s not recommended. Some other conditions can be detrimental, too, like if you’re allergic to sedatives, or have liver or kidney disorders that interfere with your body’s ability to metabolize the drug. Depending on your circumstances, other options like nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or IV (intravenous) sedation may be a better fit.

If you aren’t sure whether you’re a good candidate for oral conscious sedation, feel free to ask your dentist. They’ll gather information about your medical history and dental needs to determine whether it’s the right choice for you!
