How Much Does Sedation Dentistry Cost?

Woman benefiting from sedation dentistryIf visiting your dentist makes your palms sweat or your heart race, sedation dentistry can help you sit back and relax. However, it’s also a great option if you need complex or lengthy treatment. Although it offers exceptional benefits, dental insurance doesn’t always cover the cost of sedation. There’s no flat fee for dental sedation because every situation differs, but don’t have to compromise your comfort if money is tight. Here’s what you need to know when budgeting for sedation dentistry.

Factors Affecting the Cost of Sedation

The cost of sedation can vary considerably because there are several types available, like nitrous oxide, oral conscious, and IV sedatives. Mild sedatives cost about $150 to $200, while deeper sedation can run $500 per hour. General anesthesia differs because it’s not considered sedation, which means your insurance may pay some of the cost. The most common dental sedatives include:

  • Nitrous Oxide: Better known as “laughing gas,” the inhaled sedative is safe for most patients.
  • Oral Conscious: A prescribed medication can cause a deep level of relaxation.
  • IV Sedation: You can sleep through your appointment, but you will remain alert to respond to your dentist.

Besides the type of sedation used, other factors will influence the cost, like the amount administered.

Dental Insurance and Sedation Dentistry

Many dental plans consider sedation a luxury service, like teeth whitening. However, it may be covered under specific expectations, like general anesthesia, for medically necessary procedures. Patients with certain medical conditions or disabilities can have coverage for sedation if dental care isn’t possible without it. Even patients with severe phobias can use their insurance to offset the cost.

If your dental insurance approves the service, most policies cover $1,000 to $1,500 of the treatment’s total cost after meeting your annual deductible. Dental insurance can be confusing, but you won’t have to navigate your policy alone. Your dental team will work on your behalf to maximize any applicable benefits.

Paying for Sedation Dentistry

If your dental insurance won’t cover the cost or there’s a remaining balance, your dentist will offer various solutions to keep the service affordable. Besides traditional payment methods, most dental offices accept third-party financing. Based on your credit approval, you can pay using monthly installments with little or no interest. Many dental offices also provide in-house savings plans. After a membership fee, you can benefit from discounted fees for common services, like sedation dentistry.

Your comfort is your dentist’s top priority. They’ll help you find the solutions you need to enjoy your time in the dental chair without worrying about a large bill.
